Choosing the setting for a sapphire ring

You need to be aware of the tastes of the person who will be wearing the jewellery: are they a fan of yellow gold? Does she prefer the more discreet look of white gold or white gold? Sapphire goes perfectly with either, so the choice is yours.

Which sapphire to choose?

Sapphire belongs to the very exclusive club of precious stones, which has only four members: diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

At Pierres de Julie, we offer a wide range of sapphire rings in different colours to suit every taste.

The best-known sapphire is blue, but did you know that there are other colours of natural or even colourless sapphires?  Green, pink, yellow, orange, black or even colourless, the sapphire surprises us with the range of its shades. So how much do you really know about sapphires? Let's take a look at this fascinating stone.

The price of sapphire

The price of a sapphire depends on a number of factors, ranging from a few hundred euros for a single carat to tens of thousands of euros for the most valuable stones.

To determine the price of a sapphire, five main criteria are examined: weight, purity, colour density, cut and whether or not it has been treated.

The history of sapphire

This stone is said to be "precious" when it is blue. So when we talk about "sapphire", the word is associated with this hue, otherwise we always have to specify its colour: pink sapphire, yellow sapphire, orange sapphire, green sapphire, etc.

Chemically speaking, it is an aluminium oxide coloured by titanium (which gives it its blue colour) and by iron (which darkens the gem to a greater or lesser extent depending on the iron content).

In ancient Greece, sapphire was known as hyacinth, the name given to the blue iris.

Sapphire and ruby are the same stone, but sapphire is blue and ruby is red, and they both belong to the corundum family.

Corundum is the second most scratch-resistant gem family after diamond, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.

Significance and beliefs about sapphire

A gemstone may be chosen for its colour or shape, but sometimes it is the meaning or property of the gem that determines the choice. The sapphire is a symbol of truth and wisdom.
