Mother of pearl

Mother-of-pearl is secreted by molluscs in their shells.

This organic material is made up of 3% water.

Mother-of-pearl can be distinguished by its blue, pink or yellow reflections. These change depending on the angle of observation. This is what gives mother-of-pearl its charm.

It is the successive layers of crystals that create its iridescence. The most common colours for mother-of-pearl are silvery white and light pink.
