Beryl is a beryllium aluminosilicate belonging to the hexagonal system.

This family includes many well-known stones, such as emerald when the green colour is very pronounced (otherwise the gem is called green beryl), morganite when the beryl is pink, aquamarine for the blue variety, heliodore for the deep golden yellow and yellow beryl for the paler yellow.

With a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, beryl is found in Madagascar, Brazil, Mozambique and the Urals.
